Mary Smith

Mary Godwin Smith, 98, of Pelham passed away Sunday, May 17, 2020, at her daughter's residence in Cairo. A private graveside service will be at Pelham City Cemetery at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, May 19, 2020. Kyle C. Smith will officiate. Born October 23, 1921, in Grady County, she was the daughter of the late John and Mamie Ponder Godwin. On October 2, 1947, she married James R. Smith Sr. She was a homemaker and member of Mizpah Primitive Baptist Church. She is survived by her son, James R. Smith Jr. (Patty) of Youngsville, NC; two daughters, Cheryl Gravenstein (Ed) of Cairo; Mary Ruth Murdoch (John) of Wind Gap, PA; grandchildren, Kyle C. Smith (Caroline), Jenny Smith, Laura Varnadore (Payton), Edwin (Trey) Gravenstein III (Ashley), Eleanor Harowicz (Jonathan), Sarah Murdoch, and Annie Murdoch; great-grandchildren, Cooper Smith, Coleman Smith, Caleb Varnadore, Andrew Varnadore, Benjamin Varnadore, Caden Gravenstein, Delaney Gravenstein, and William Harowicz; and a brother, Arthur S. Godwin of Whigham. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and four brothers, Samuel Godwin, LaFayette Godwin, Donald Godwin, and Walter Godwin.
