On May 3, 2023, James Wesley Sizemore, Sr., also affectionately known as “Poppie”, transitioned from his earthly home to his heavenly home at the age of 96. James, of Pelham, GA and Hogansville, GA, was reunited with his past family and friends. He was a loving and doting husband for 76 years to his always beautiful wife Dorothy “Nannie” Sizemore, also of Pelham, GA and Hogansville, GA. Poppie lived years longer than expected due to his love for his grandchildren, Melissa, Jennifer, Heather, Chris, and Brian; and great-grandchildren, Noah, Hannah, Braydon, Haven, Andrew, Cooper, Haylee, Ethan, Naomi, Madison, and Caleb. He tolerated his children, James (Sharon) of Hogansville, Randy (deceased) of Hogansville, Richard (Sheryl) of Holly Springs, and Sarah (Marcus) of Bolingbroke. James is a veteran of World War II. He served honorably in the United States Navy on the DE 365 USS McGinty with the rank of Seaman Second Class V-6 USNR. For his service during World War II, he was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal and the Navy Occupation Service Medal. He worked for Southern Bell for 30 years and was also a volunteer Firefighter, volunteer Police Officer and dedicated lots of time to the American Legion Post 144 Pelham, GA. He loved fishing, camping, spending time with friends and family, First Baptist Church of Pelham, GA and especially all veterans of the armed forces. Poppie graduated from Pelham High School way too many years ago, and always followed his Hornet sports team, win or lose. He did not attend college but was an avid, or should we say, rabid Georgia Bulldog fan. Woof Woof. Go Dawgs. When Poppie passed, we swear we heard Larry Munson shout: “Run Poppie Run”. Poppie, you will always be our hero. The memorial service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, May 17, at the First Baptist Church of Pelham, and interment will be in Pelham City Cemetery with military honors.
