Elmer Rhett Butler, 87, of Pelham, Georgia passed away on Friday, May 9, 2014 at Southern Pines Living Center in Thomasville, Georgia. Born on August 7, 1926 in Mitchell County, Georgia to the late George and Fannie Mae Morrison Butler, he was a farmer, a former probate judge and the retired Mitchell County Tax Commissioner. He graduated from Pelham High School and attended Mercer University. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Pelham where he served many years as a deacon and Sunday School teacher. He was a past member of the Camilla Rotary Club, the Pelham Chamber of Commerce, the Pelham City Council where he served as Mayor Pro Tem and the Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He was also a former president of the Georgia Cattleman's Association. He is survived by his children Daune B. Parker of Blue Ridge, GA, Donna Lynn B. Singletary and husband, John, of Ochlocknee, Georgia, Rhett Butler and wife, Lisa, of Rome, Georgia, grandchildren Becky T. Dunham, Waye Thompson, Valerie P. Waldrep, Cindy P. Phillips, Ben Butler, Chase Butler, Brad Butler, great grandchildren Madelyn Murphy, Colt Dunham, Bryce Thompson, Daniel Phillips, sisters Elizabeth B. Hamilton of Eatonton, Georgia, Kay Aldridge of Cairo, Georgia, numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Frances Jones Butler, parents George and Fannie Mae Morrison Butler, sisters Thelma Hussey, Merle Simpson and brother George W. Butler, Jr. No formal visitation will be held. Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday, May 13, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of the funeral home. Dr. Steve Wooten will officiate the services. Grandsons Waye Thompson, Ben Butler, Chase Butler and Brad Butler will serve as pallbearers. Burial will be held at a later time.
