Barbara Catherine Garrard, 68, born June 22, 1950, departed this life May 18, 2019 at Grady General Hospital, Cairo, Georgia with her family at her side. Barbara was born to the late Mr. and Mrs. A. B Garrard, Sr. (Berniece Huber) of Pelham, Georgia. Barbara attended Brenau Academy in Gainesville, Georgia, Pelham High School, and was a graduate of the Sacred Heart of Jesus High School in New Orleans, Louisiana. She earned a B. A. degree from Georgia State University in Atlanta, Georgia. Barbara was exceptionally intelligent with a prodigious vocabulary. She passed the Law School Aptitude Test with a high score and was admitted to the University of Georgia School of Law but did not attend due to health issues. She developed an interior plants business in which she supplied and cared for green plants in offices and restaurants in the Atlanta area. Due to continuing health issues she returned to Pelham and her family home 22 years ago. She was a friend to many and kept up life- long friendships with friends scattered around the United States. She particularly loved animals and had several Boston Terriers over the decades and one well loved Persian cat. She was also kind to stray cats and fed many. Barbara enjoyed traveling to Europe in her youth and in later life to visit her sister in Alabama and to another sister’s beach cottage in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Barbara was an avid reader all of her life and a creative cook. Barbara had an ear for languages and learned Farsi and Greek listening to friends speak it. She is survived by her sisters Judy G. Adams (Tony) of Pelham, Georgia, Jane G. Smith of Evergreen, Alabama, Rebekah G. Bisger (Fred) of Richmond, Virginia, a brother, A. B. Garrrard, Jr. of Tifton, Georgia, a nephew, Garrard Adams of Atlanta, Georgia and two nieces, Julia A. Spence ( Hunter) of Newton, Georgia and Mollie B. Bisger of Richmond, Virginia. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a nephew, Eben N. Rose and a brother in law, Palmer Smith.
